06.19.15 Albert Lea lake dam ribbon cutting ceremony

The Shell Rock River Watershed District will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on June 19, 2015 at the Albert Lea Lake Dam.  The ceremony recognizes the completion of the Albert Lea Lake Dam and Fish Barrier.  In case of rain, an alternate date has been scheduled at 11:30 a.m. on June 26, 2015.

04.26.15 Lake Cleanup 

Annual Lake Cleanup Day- Frank Hall Park, Albert Lea Lake

Forty volunteers showed up to conduct a Spring shoreline cleanup. The volunteers collected 45 bags of trash, 4 tires, various debris, and many recyclables. A special thanks should be said to Hy Vee for donating bottled water, The Dam Bait Shop for prizes, Green Mill of Albert Lea for gift certificates, Cargill for hosting their volunteer project during the event, and the Shell Rock River Watershed District staff for providing equipment to gather large or submerged items.

12:30 pm – 1:30 pm- Bowdrill (Fire by Friction) Demo: Come watch and see how fire has been made for millennia with primitive technology. All Ages
 
1:30 pm – 2:30 pm- People Fishing: Using rod and reel, youth ages 5-16 can use multiple “baits” such as sunglasses, keys, and the ultimate bait…money to get adults and passersby to “bite” a.k.a. grab the fishing line/bait. Ages 5-16
 
2:30 pm – 3:00 pm- Break/no programming
 
3:00 pm – 4:00 pm- Bowdrill and Hand Drill (Fire by Friction): Try your hand at using friction to make fire. You’ll have the tools and instruction to learn the basics of friction fires. All Ages
 
4:00 pm – 5:15 pm- Wild Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk: Believe it or not, a stroll  around the event grounds will yield many useful wild plants. Your guide will point out and discuss how and when to use various common plants as food, medicine and more. All Ages

Come ride the Pelican Breeze II with nationally known humorist Al Batt and watch all of  the "A L Floats"action!  The Boat leaves the dock at !:30 p.m.  Cost is $15.00.  Reservations are recommended as Al's cruises usually sell out. Call 507-383-7273.
 
 A regular 90 min. cruise to see all the floating excitement is at 4:00 p.m.   Cost  of the cruise is  $10.00 and no reservations are needed.

5.16.14 Community Celebrates Grant for Canoe Launch

Albert Lea residents and officials celebrated a $50,000 grant for Albert Lea Lake on Friday during a ceremony at Frank Hall Park.
The grant, presented from Michelob Golden Draft Light, will go toward restoring a portion of shoreline of the lake and designating it as a soft-launch for canoes, kayaks and other nonmotorized boats.
David Anglum with Anheuser-Busch speaks Friday during a ceremony at Frank Hall Park in which the company awarded the Lakes Foundation of Albert Lea with a $50,000 grant. “We’re very pleased,” said David Anglum, the trade marketing channel lead for Anheuser-Busch. “We’re proud to bring the Albert Lea Lake project to life.”

5.16.2014 | Golden Point Launch

On Friday, May 16th at 10:30AM, Anheuser Busch will be presenting a check for $50,000 to mark the commencement of the Albert Lea Lake restoration and soft launch.  This presentation will take place near Frank Hall Park and Front Street near the shores of Albert Lea.

Albert Lea community residents were proud to gather around "Big AL," the dredge purchased by the Shell Rock River Watershed District.  This big guy named during the 2013 Name the Dredge Contest will help clear up Fountain and Albert Lea Lakes over the next few years.
